The Mets are on a three game streak!
The Mets clinched the series victory against the Phillies yesterday with a 5-1 win. There’s also a good chance that the three game streak could become a sweep today without the Mets even taking the field, but more on that in a bit.
David Peterson was fantastic last night, allowing 1 run on a solo homer and two hits total in 6.0 innings of work where he didn’t walk anyone and struck out 10 batters. He showed flashes of this in his first start too, sandwiched between a rough first and fifth inning. The bullpen behind Peterson was strong too – Loup got 5 outs on 14 pitches and the Edwin Diaz looked amazing in a perfect inning of relief with two strikeouts.
The main question going into today’s game – will it happen? Rain rolls in late morning today and it doesn’t leave the area until the late afternoon. The game is at noon today so the Mets have enough time to get out to Denver for a weekend series. Even though the rain leaves by late afternoon, a 5 hour delay might not be possible because it’s supposed to snow tonight which will impact the Mets flight in. And since the Mets still have a couple of home series against the Phillies (and the Phillies are only a quick trip down 95 away), the teams and the league may lean towards just cancelling today’s game. We can all argue at that point if that the means the Mets swept the Phillies or not.
If the game does happen – it’s deGrom day! In two starts this year, deGrom has tossed 14.0 innings allowing 1 run off 8 hits while walking 2 and striking out an absurd 21 batters. He has a small sample size 0.64 ERA, 1.50 FIP, 0.714 WHUP, 604 ERA+ and 13.5 K/9. He opened the season against the Phillies where he shut them out over 6.0 innings while allowing 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 7. He only tossed 77 pitches in that start before Rojas pulled him and the Mets bullpen melted down behind him. The Phillies have the following numbers against deGrom:

Despite playing the Phillies 6 times already – the Mets bats have not seen starter Zach Eflin yet (and the rain may keep that true for a bit longer). Eflin has allowed 5 runs from 11 hits and 2 walks over 13.0 innings this year. He started the year strong against the Braves, holding them to 1 run over 7.0 innings while striking out 8. In his second start in Atlanta he allowed 4 runs over 6.0 innings while striking out only 2. Last year he pitched in 11 games, 10 starts, over 59.0 innings with a 3.97 ERA, 3.39 FIP, 1.271 WHIP and a 111 ERA+, all career bests. He did not face the Mets at all last year.
