Well, Wheeler is officially the new deGrom. Wheeler threw another excellent game, going 7.0 innings allowing 1 run but got saddled with the loss as the Mets offense couldn’t muster anything and the bullpen behind him exploded resulting in a 7-0 Mets lost with only three players getting hits. Meanwhile, in the minors, Alonso went 4-4 with 2 homers and no plans to be called up.
The Mets will try to reverse their fortunes this afternoon first with Steven Matz and then with the bats. Matz is 5-11 over 24 games and 121.2 innings with a 4.36 ERA, 4.74 FIP, 1.307 WHIP and 84 ERA+. In his last two starts he has allowed 3 runs over 12.0 innings from 7 hits and 2 walks while striking out 12. That includes a start against the Giants where he allowed 2 runs over 5.0 innings, a game the Mets eventually won. The Giants have the following numbers against Matz:
- d’Arnaud 1-8
- Hundley -5
- Pence 0-4, BB
- Belt 1-2, BB
- Crawford 2-3
- Panik 1-3
- Hernandez 1-2, 2B
- Longoria 1-2, HR
The Mets bats will try to find themselves in San Fransciso against Derek Holland who is 7-8 over 29 games and 25 starts with 140.2 innings logged. He’s posted a 3.65 ERA, 3.82 FIP, 1.280 WHIP and 109 ERA+. In his last three starts he has pitched 16.0 innings with a 1.13 ERA including an outing against the Mets where he held the Amazin’s to 1 run over 5 innings from 4 hits and a walk. The Giants would win that game 2-1. The Mets have the following numbers against him:
- Jackson 7-27, 2 2B, 2 HR, 7 BB
- frazier 2-6, 2 BB
- Reyes 3-6
- Flores 2-3, 2B
