Game Preview: Yankees vs Mets

The Mets and Yankees matchup in Queens this evening for the first Subway Series of the year. The Yankees are first in the AL East. The Mets are first in the NL East. It’s the second half of the season. New York City is always better when both the Mets and the Yankees are good and finally these two teams get to face-off tonight!

The Yankees have powered through opponents this season with a +200 run differential and an expected win loss record (69-28) that is even better than their actual (66-31). That being said, the Yankees are 5-5 over their last 10 games.

The Mets offense finally woke up late in the last game of the Padres series, scoring eight runs. The Mets have a run differential of +82 on the season, the best in the NL East.

Taijuan Walker gets the start for the Mets tonight. Over 16 games and 91 2/3 innings this season he has recorded a 2.55 ERA, 2.98 FIP, 1.091 WHIP and a 157 ERA+. Over his last seven games and 45 innings he has posted a 1.80 ERA and a 2.08 FIP holding opponents to only 31 hits and 10 walks while striking out 48 batters. In his last two starts he has allowed only one run over 13 innings from seven hits and three walks while striking out 12.

Walker had two starts against the Yankees last year. In his first start, he held the Yankees to two runs from two hits and two walks over 5 2/3 innings. In his second start he allowed fie runs from six hits and a walk over six innings. The Yankees have the following numbers against Walker:

The Mets bats will get a look at Jordan Montgomery who will make his 20th start of the year. Over 108 1/3 innings, he has a 3.24 ERA, 3.81 FIP, 1.052 WHIP and a 118 ERA+. In his last two starts he has allowed five runs from 13 hits and two walks over 12 1/3 innings.

Montgomery faced the Mets twice last season. In his first start he allowed three runs from six hits and three walks over 4 1/3 innings. In his second start he allowed seven runs, five earned, from seven hits and three walks over 3 1/3 innings. The Mets have the following a career numbers against him:
