Game Preview: Mets @ Cubs

The Mets conclude their terrific first half of the season today! The Mets have battled through injuries throughout 2022 and more recently have survived Atlanta’s awakening. We are about to head into a week celebrating the Mets All-Stars that have made this season wonderful, but it’s not just the All-Stars on the team that have supported the Mets this season.

Pitchers like today’s starter, David Peterson, have really held the Mets together for long periods of time. Peterson has pitched 67 1/3 innings over 14 games this year with a 3.48 ERA, 4.00 FIP, 1.248 WHIP and a 115 ERA+. He has already pitched more innings this season than his last two seasons, his only other seasons as a major league pitcher.

In his last five starts he has pitched 27 1/3 innings allowing 10 runs from 21 hits and 10 walks while striking out 41 batters (3.29 ERA, 3.80 FIP). Last season he faced the Cubs twice. First in April he allowed six runs, only three earned, over 3 1/3 innings from four hits and two walks. In June he held the Cubs to one hit and no runs over six innings. The Cubs have the following numbers against Peterson:

  • Wilson Contreras 1-5, K
  • Yan Gomes 1-5
  • Ian Happ 0-3, 2 K
  • Dave Bote 1-2, K
  • Jason Heyward 0-2
  • Patrick Wisdon 0-1, BB, K

The Mets bats will get a look at Adrian Sampson tonight. Over six games and 27 innings, Sampson has a 3.33 ERA, 3.48 FIP, 1.111 WHIP and a 128 ERA+. As a starter only he has pitched 21 1/3 innings over four starts with a 4.22 ERA. In the month of July so far he has had one good start where he allowed only one run over 5 2/3 innings against he Brewers sandwiched between two starts where he allowed a combined eight runs over 10 2/3 innings. The Mets have the following career numbers against him:

  • Mark Canha 2-9, 2 HR, K
  • Starling Marte 2-5, K
  • Eduardo Escobar 1-3, 2B
  • Francisco Lindor 0-2, 2 K
