Game Preview: Phillies vs Mets

The opener of the series didn’t go the Mets way – despite an amazing out from Max Scherzer the Mets couldn’t get runs across the plate. The Mets had a frustrating loss last Friday too before they dominated for the rest of the weekend – let’s hope the same thing happens today!

Jacob deGrom will make his third start of the season this evening for the Mets. Over 10 2/3 innings he’s allowed three runs from four hits and a walk while striking out an amazing 18 batters. In his last start he was perfect going into the 6th inning. After recording two outs he allowed a walk followed by a homer. At one point in the game the Braves swung and missed on 16 consecutive sliders – deGrom was just on another level.

In two starts against the Phillies last year he allowed only two runs from seven hits and three walks while striking out 12 over 12 innings. The Phillies have the following career numbers against deGrom:

  • Bryce Harper 12-41, 2 2B, 2 HR, 10 BB, 15 K
  • J.T. Realmuto 4-30, 2B, 10 K
  • Johan Camargo 7-26, 2B, HR, 2 BB, 9 K
  • Rhys Hoskins 4-21, 2 2B, 8 K
  • Jean Segura 4-21, 2B, 6 K
  • Kyle Schwarber 1-12, BB, 6 K
  • Alec Bohm 0-6, 4 K
  • Nick Castellanos 0-3, 2 K

The Mets face an old foe in Aaron Nola this evening. Over 22 games and 144 2/3 innings, Nola has a 3.17 ERA, 2.84 FIP, 0.947 WHIP and 130 ERA+. In his last two starts he has allowed two runs from 11 hits and three walks over 12 innings while striking out 13. Nola has faced the Mets three times this year. The first time he allowed three runs from three hits (two homers) and three walks over 3 1/2 innings. Then at the end of April he allowed three runs from seven hits over six innings. In his very next start he locked the Mets down, allowing only one run over seven innings – in a game the Mets won 8-7 (you know the game). The Mets have the following career numbers against Nola:

  • Brandon Nimmo 11-36, 3B, HR, 11 BB, 14 K
  • Jeff McNeil 10-34, 2B, HR, 4 BB, 8 K
  • Pete Alonso 13-37, 3 2B, 4 HR, 3 BB, 11 K
  • Francisco Lindor 4-17, 2 2B, BB, 5 K
  • Starling Marte 6-18, HR, 6 K
  • Eduardo Escobar 2-9, 2B, 2 BB, 4 K
  • James McCann 1-11, 5 K
  • Luis Guillorme 2-7, BB, 2 K
  • Mark Canha 1-6, 2B, K
  • Tyler Naquin 2-3, HR, BB, K
  • Daniel Vogelbach 2-3
