The Mets chances of making the post season decreased again last night as they lost the opener against the Phillies. The Mets now sit four games under .500, trailing the division by 5.5 games and the Wild Card by 6.0 games. They aren’t mathematically eliminated yet, but it feels like time is slipping for them to make a miracle happen.
The Mets tried to get a rally going late yesterday, scoring two runs in the 8th inning, but it wasn’t enough as they lost another one run game. There’s not much more to say about the subject that hasn’t been said yet – losing games by one run has killed the Mets this season. Hopefully the Mets can make something different happen today.
Carlos Carrasco gets the start for the Mets. Over nine starts and 38.2 innings, Carrasco has a 5.59 ERA, 4.38 FIP, 1.293 WHIP and a 72 ERA+. In his last two starts, Carrasco has allowed six runs, but only three earned, over 10.0 innings from 10 hits and five walks. His last start was the better of the two, allowing two runs from three hits. The four walks cost Carrasco though and he had to leave after 5.0 innings after tossing 96 pitches. As a promising sign – Carrasco has now thrown 90+ pitches in back to back starts. Tonight will be his first start against the Phillies who have the following career numbers against him:
- Freddy Galvis 1-4, HR, BB, K
- Jean Segura 5-13, 2B, HR, 3 K
- J.T. Realmuto 2-4, K
- Didi Gregorius 3-13, 2B, 2 K
- Brad Miller 3-11, 2 BB, 2 K
- Matt Joyce 2-12, 2B, 2 BB, 4 K
- Bryce Harper 0-4
- Andrew McCutchen 0-3, 2 K
- Ronald Torreyes 0-2
Aaron Nola will make his 30th start of the season tonight for the Phillies. In his first 29 starts and 163.0 innings of work, Nola has a 4.58 ERA, 3.41 FIP, 1.123 WHIP, an a 90 ERA+. In the month of September, Nola has allowed 12 earned runs in 14.1 innings of work (three starts) with opponents hitting .288/.323/.475 against him. He has made three starts against the Mets this year, holding them to only four runs in 14.1 innings from 14 hits. He has also struck out an impressive 24 Mets batters in that stretch. The Mets have the following numbers against him:
- Francisco Lindor 3-6, 2 2B, BB, K
- Pete Alonso 8-27, 2 2B, 3 HR, 2 BB, 8 K
- Javier Báez 3-13, 2B, 2 HR, 3 K
- Brandon Nimmo 8-26, 10 BB, 10 K
- Dominic Smith 9-34, 6 2B, 13 K
- Jeff McNeil 7-27, 2B, 3 BB, 8 K
