The Mets return to Citi Field tonight and face a surging Brewers ball club that had an 11-game win streak snapped yesterday. The Mets enter play today with a 3.5 lead over the Braves who regained second in the division. Goal: Keep the division lead through the All-Star Break.
The Mets came back in the first game yesterday, tying it in the 7th before erupting to score 5 more runs to win 10-5. The second game didn’t go as well, the Mets lost 4-2, but still took the series. Even in that game there were some positive signs – Oswalt was able to toss 4.0 innings, Alonso hit his second homer of the day, Miguel Castro allowed no hits and no walks in 0.2 innings. The Mets will need all the momentum they can find as they take on Brandon Woodruff, All-Star, tonight.
Tylor Megill gets the start for the Mets. He was bumped from yesterday’s game so the Mets can get him in a traditional 9-inning game as the team navigates life with another starting pitcher injury (Peterson). In his first two games and 9.1 innings, he has allowed 5 runs from 8 hits and 4 walks while striking out 12. He has also already allowed two homers. He allowed more runs in his second start than his first, but was able to get a bit deeper into the game. This will be his first time facing the Brewers.
Brandon Woodruff has made 16 starts and pitched 101.1 innings this year with a 1.87 ERA, 2.79 FIP, 0.782 WHIP and a 219 ERA+. Last night he was named to his second All-Star game, his first was in 2019. Woodruff has allowed 2 runs in his last two starts and 13.0 innings from 7 hits and 5 walks while striking out 17 batters. The Mets have the following numbers against him:
- Brandon Nimmo 2-3, BB
- Pete Alonso 3-6, K
- Jeff McNeil 2-5, K
- Michael Conforto 1-3, BB, K
- Francisco Lindor 0-1, BB
- Jose Peraza 1-5
Let’s Go Mets!
