The Mets won yesterday and the Nationals lost. In a schedule oddity today, the Nationals will play another game and probably finish it before the Mets play either game in their double header. (Side note: I feel bad for Dodgers fans today – their team is playing at 11 AM eastern time).
Anyway, the Mets are coming off of a great game yesterday where Taijuan Walker brought a no-hitter into the 6th inning and the Mets offense exploded for 8 runs on 14 hits. Now the Mets will try to take the series in the marquee pitching matchup of the weekend: Stroman vs Cole.
Marcus Stroman has pitched in 16 games and 88.1 innings with a 2.45 ERA, 3.60 FIP, 1.109 WHIP and a 157 ERA+. His last start was his first one coming back from injury and it was a bit rough. He allowed 5 runs and walked 3 batters, leading to 4 runs, 2 earned over 3.0 innings. Stroman has been great in double header shortened games this year, going 6 scoreless innings twice, and one outing where defensive mistakes led to 4 runs, but only 2 earned, over 5 innings. The Yankees have the following numbers against Stroman:
- Aaron Judge 8-18, 4 HR, 4 BB, 4 K
- Luke Voit 2-3, K
- Gleyber Torres 2-5, 2 2B, 2 K
- Miguel Andujar 3-7, 2 2B, K
- Gio Urshela 3-6
- Brett Gardner 12-45, 2 2B, 2 HR, 4 BB, 5 K
- Giancarlo Stanton 1-6, 3 BB, 3 K
- Gary Sanchez 2-10, BB, 4 K
The Mets bats will try to pick up where they left of yesterday against Gerrit Cole. In 16 starts and 101.2 innings he has a 2.66 ERA, 2.94 FIP, 0.905 WHIP and 162 ERA+. In the month of June he allowed 17 runs, 16 earned, over 31.0 innings which is a 4.65 ERA. He started the month off allowing 5 runs over 5.0 innings and ended the month allowing 6 runs, 5 earned, over 5.0 innings. He allowed exactly 2 runs in each of his other starts in the month of June. Cole has also been surrounded by controversy around the sticky substances and he is constantly compared to Jacob deGrom. Who knows how either of those storylines will have any sort of impact on his pitching tonight. Very few Mets have see Cole in a major league game:
- James McCann 5-13, 3 2B, HR, BB, 3 K
- Michael Conforto 2-6, HR, K
- Kevin Pillar 1-2, K
- Jose Peraza 3-8, K
- Francisco Lindor 1-10, BB, 2 K
- Albert Almora Jr. 0-4
Let’s Go Mets!
