The Mets look to bounce back from a surprising loss last night.
It wasn’t initially surprising. Throughout the day when the Mets didn’t name a starter, it seemed like the Mets were going to lose. When the Mets named the started as Lucchesi, it felt like we might lose. Then the game started and the Mets jumped out to a 5-2 lead. It felt like the Mets could win. The Cardinals then tagged Lucchesi for more runs and made it 6-5 and the score stayed there despite strong outings by Reid-Foley and Gsellman. This feels like a failure both with the front office and at the manager level. With the righties in the Cardinals line up, why wasn’t Yamamoto promoted? Why didn’t the Mets go with an opener?
The after game was crazy too as the Mets fired Chili Davis and Travis Slater. So that actually happened.
And like many times in his career, Jacob deGrom will take the mound and make the Mets forget all of this tonight. Forget dropping a game they could have easily won. Forget the coaching changes. Forget the “interesting” decisions made at different levels of the organization.
Jacob deGrom has made 5 starts and pitched 35.0 innings with a 0.51 ERA, 0.83 FIP, 0.571 WHIP and a 758 ERA+. He leads the league in ERA, ERA+, H/9, S/9 and strikeouts overall (59). He’s coming off of his “worst” start of the year where he allowed one run over 6.0 innings while striking out 9. It will be the second time this year he faces a team not based on the East Coast. The first one was Colorado where he allowed 3 runs, all unearned, over 6.0 innings while striking out 14. The Cardinals have the following numbers against him:
- Harrison Bader 2-3, 2B, K
- Paul DeJong 4-11, 2B, 2 HR, 2 K
- Matt Carpenter 4-20, HR, 5 K
- Paul Goldschmidt 1-8, BB, 3 K
- Nolan Arenado 2-20, 2B, 5 K
The Mets bats will get a look at Johan Oveido tonight. The young righty had a great first game, where he pitched 4.2 innings allowing 2 hits and nothing else against the Brewers. In his start against the Phillies he allowed 3 runs from 3 hits while striking out 7. He made his major league debut last year and pitched in 24.2 innings over 5 games with a 5.47 ERA, 5.30 FIP, 1.378 WHIP and a 78 ERA+. There is no one the roster who has seen Oveido in a major league game.
Let’s Go Mets!
