Game Preview: Mets @ Yankees

The Mets and Yankees play two today! No, you are not reliving your Tuesday all over again seeing the same game preview from earlier (although parts of this one were lifted from the original one yesterday when Vargas was supposed to start). The Yankees scheduled their make up for yesterday’s Mets game today meaning we got two premier games in one day. A little shocking, but I guess the tickets were already sold for this all New York Event.

Starting for the Mets Jason Vargaswho is coming off a complete game shutout. He is 2-3 over 10 games and 9 starts this season tossing 45.1 innings with a 3.57 ERA, 4.27 FIP, 1.346 WHIP and 112 ERA+. In his last three starts he has tossed 21.0 innings with a 0.86 ERA and in his last 7 starts he has pitched 39.0 innings with a 1.85 ERA. He missed the Yankees last year but in 2017 he allowed 9 runs over 10.0 innings in starts against them. The Yankees have the following numbers against Jason:

James Paxton is 3-2 over 9 games and 46.1 innings as a Yankee posting a 3.11 ERA, 2.78 FIP, 1.165 WHIP and 144 ERA+. Paxton was part of the large group of Yankees who got injured this season, hurting his MCL around the start of May. He returned at the end of May and has made two very different starts since then. In his first start he held the Padres to no runs and no hits over 4.0 innings. The following week he allowed 4 runs off 4 hits and 3 walks against the Blue Jays. He pitched against the Mets in 2017 and was quite good, allowing no runs and no walks over 6.0 innings of work. The Mets have the following numbers against him:
