Game Preview: Mets @ Marlins

The Mets and Marlins close out their three game set today on Mike Piazza induction day! For those of you who are watching the game instead of the induction (or at the same time!) you can expect to see Steven Matz trot out against Jose Urena.

Steven is 7-6 over 17 games and 101.0 innings with a 3.56 ERA on the season. In his last start against the Cubs he allowed 4 ER over 8 hits and 5.0 innings. Steven blamed this on mistakes made in the game, but its hard to separate his recent performance from the news of his bone spurs. Since June 12th, Matz has made 7 starts logging 40.2 innings with a 5.31 ERA. His two starts against the Marlins this year have been quite different. His first start of the season was against them and it was his worst in his career as he allowed 7 ER over 1.2 innings. In his last start vs the Marlins, July 5th, he allowed only 2 ER over 7.0 innings. The Marlins have the following numbers against Matz:

  • Yelich 2-8
  • Ozuna 2-5
  • Prado 2-6
  • Mathis 2-5, HR
  • Rojas 0-5
  • Stanton 3-5, 2 HR
  • Hechavarria 1-4
  • C Johnson 1-3

Jose Urena will be making his second start of the season today. Overall he’s 1-1 over 17 games and 1 start with a 6.23 ERA while pitching 26.0 innings with 17 K’s. Last year he had 9 starts mixed into 20 games posting a 5.25 ERA over 61.2 innings of work. His last time out was his first start of the season, he allowed only 1 ER over 5.2 innings. He hasn’t faced the Mets this year but last year he logged 3.0 innings against the Mets in two relief appearances where he allowed 3 ER while striking out none. The Mets have the following numbers against Jose:

  • Walker 1-3, HR
  • Cabrera 1-1
  • Cespedes 0-1
  • d’Arnaud 0-1
  • deGrom 0-1
  • Flores 1-1, HR
