The Mets will have a tall-order today in the rubber game of the three game set in Cleveland with Corey Kluber. It was a strange day for the Mets yesterday. They had a lead-off homer from Grandy to start off the game and Harvey was in a groove. Then Harvey completely fell apart as did the bullpen behind him as the Mets allowed 7 runs over 3 innings. Later, the Mets made it interesting thanks to homers from Cespedes and Walker brought the Mets within two. The comeback wasn’t enough as the Mets ended up dropping the game 7-5.
Steven Matz will be looking to rebound from his horrendous first start of the season. He allowed 7 ER over 6 hits and 2 walks in 1.2 innings of work. He’s coming off of a season where he went 4-0 over 6 games and 35.2 innings while striking out 34 in 35.2 innings. This will be the first time Steven has faced the Indians, the only player on Cleveland’s roster who has faced Matz is Byrd who is 1-3 against him.
Corey Kluber is 0-2 this season over 2 starts and 13.0 innings with a 4.85 ERA. He’s allowed 7 ER over those innings while walking 4 and striking out 11. Last year he went 9-16 over 32 starts and 222.0 innings with a 3.49 ERA. He led the league in losses and complete games (4), which is a fun double statistic. The year before he led the league in wins at 18 with a 2.44 ERA and won the Cy Young. He faced the Mets back in 2013 where he allowed 2 ER over 5.0 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against Kluber:
- De Aza 3-23
- Cespedes 4-12, 2B, HR
- Cabrera 1-5
- Granderson 1-3
- d’Arnaud 0-2
- Duda 0-2
Let’s Go Mets!
