The Mets need a win in the worst way today. Yesterday they lost 9-1 to the Pirates, so they were swept, in a 3 game set where they were outscored 21-4. It is also their 5th loss in the last 6 games and their 4th loss in the last 6 games that was a blowout. But, because of that early April streak, the Mets are still, barely, above .500 and are only 2.5 games back from the top, maybe the Phillies is just what the doctor ordered.
Bartolo Colon, one day removed from his 42nd birthday, will get the start tonight. On the season he is 6-3 over 9 starts and 55.2 innings with a 4.85 ERA. After an impressive start to the season, he has now tossed 4 poor games in his last 5 including three in a row where has allowed 4 ER over 6.0, 6 R and 5 ER over 5.0, and 9 R and 8 ER over 4.1. That first start, 4 ER, over 6, was against the Phillies. The Phillies have the following numbers against Colon:
- Howard 3-17, 2 HR
- Revere 7-18, 2B
- Sizemore 3-14
- Ruiz 5-15, 2B
- Utley 5-14, 2 2B
- Francoeur 1-5
- Galvis 1-3
The Mets bats will draw Severino Gonzalez, making his 4th major league start. On the season he is 2-1 over 12.2 innings with a 7.11 ERA. He pitched twice in the rotation between late April and the first week of May and he was recently recalled to start on May 20th. In his last two starts he has allowed 3 ER over 10.0 innings, so his season numbers are junk only from his first start. In the minors this year he was 1-2 over 5 starts and 29.0 innings with a 4.34 ERA.
Let’s Go Mets!
