Trading Ike Davis, Lucas Duda at First, and Quotes

It wasn’t just a weather system that pushed through Newark and the 5 Boroughs yesterday as Adam Rubin quoted a source saying that the Mets will consider trading Ike Davis this winter because, among other things, they aren’t happy with how late he stays out after games and that he doesn’t take coaching advice.

Ike was then quoted as dumbfounded, because as he says he never heard this from anybody in the organization.

And I have to agree with Ike on this one. Ike has tried a lot of things this season, he was hardest on himself and wasn’t a sour player.

And the trading debate, in my opinion, is off point. If you are going to trade Davis, do it because he’s a good player, don’t undersell him like this. If we trade Davis, we need a lot, like two ready to play in the majors prospects lot. Davis is more than just a bat (which, when was the last time the Mets had a player with 27 homers in a season?) he’s also one of the best defensive players at first base. Duda is a defensive liability in the outfield, but moving him to first base doesn’t help the team that much.

Look, I’m still in the camp of thinking that this team needs Duda and Davis. Not one or the other. The positions the team needs to work on are the other OF positions, which is the elephant in the room in the Duda vs Davis debate.
