The Mets look to avoid a sweep and three losses in a row as they take on the Blue Jays this afternoon. Yesterday the Mets received good pitching as after Batista left with an injury, Hefner turned in a great performance and the bullpen kept the Mets in the entire game. The lineup however, with some “help” from the umpires, never got it going and the Mets fell 2-0. Dillon Gee will help the Mets move beyond that today as he takes on Henderson Alvarez.
Dillon Gee is 2-3 on the season with a 5.63 ERA over 43.0 innings of work. He is coming off two bad starts in a row where he has pitched a combined 11.o innings and allowed 11 ER (still striking out 8 though). In his young career, he has never faced the Blue Jays however he has faced two players in the Jays lineup. Kelly Johnson, the former Brave, is 0-3 against Gee lifetime while Ben Francisco is 0-1. Basically, as it is to be expected in interleague series for young players, Gee will be a mystery for the Blue Jays.
The theme of mystery continues with the Blue Jays pitcher as the Mets get Henderson Alvarez today. Henderson is 3-3 with a 2.62 ERA in 2012 over 55.0 innings of work. In his last two starts, he has pitched 13.2 innings with a 1.98 ERA, a number that drops much lower when you include his first start in May which was a complete game shutout. With all of the homegrown talent in the Mets lineup, it isn’t surprising that not a single Mets batter has any major league experience against Henderson.
